Try answering it for the AI tools currently in your stack. The exercise is uncomfortable.
Most enterprises cannot tell you cost per AI-generated meeting booked. They cannot tell you cost per AI-assisted close. They cannot tell you cost per AI-deflected support ticket measured against the deflected ticket's true contribution margin.
They can tell you license cost. They can tell you seat count. They can tell you adoption rate.
None of those answer the CFO's question.
This is why finance has gone from rubber-stamping AI procurement to gating it. The numbers being presented are the wrong numbers. The CFO is asking unit economics; the CIO is presenting capability and adoption.

It has a kill criterion. The team can articulate, in advance, the unit economics threshold at which the program will be shut down or restructured. CFOs have noticed that programs without kill criteria almost never get killed, even when they should be.
It has an architecture that lets the AI reach the system of record where the outcome lives. The model is not generating an insight in a side panel. The agent is not producing a recommendation in a dashboard. The output lands in the CRM, the support queue, the campaign engine, the order system — wherever the revenue actually moves.

The unit economics problem is not, fundamentally, a finance problem. It is an architecture problem dressed up in an income statement.
AI investments produce defensible unit economics when the AI sits in the path of the outcome. The success metric is incremental outcome cost, not adoption. Adoption is a leading indicator at best and a vanity metric at worst. Cost per booked meeting, cost per converted lead, cost per renewed account, cost per resolved case — these are the metrics that survive finance review. Pick the one closest to revenue and instrument it on day one.
The deployment target is the system of record, not the dashboard. If the AI's output cannot reach the place the revenue actually moves, the program will not produce defensible unit economics, no matter how good the model is.
